As a successful musician and guitar teacher, a Maiden fan since 1983's "Piece of Mind Album," I had stopped listening to Dream Theater's new material 15 years ago when their music became so technical and fused that I couldn't pump my fist into the air to it anymore. I was surprised that what they performed was very relevant to the rock that's happening today. By the end of the evening, I was able to pump my fist in the air and got into nearly every 8-minute song they played. I wished they had played longer. I encouraged 3 of my students to go with me and share what I so much enjoyed on Maiden's "Powerslave" Tour, 1985. Of the 90-minute set, I only recognized half the material. They had learned several Maiden songs from the 80's and were anxiously waiting to hear "The Trooper" live. What I didn't recognize sent me away from my seat, wondering around, trying to get a break from the much weaker, newer material and out of the heat from one of the worse venues in town. My students were more lost with the songs than I was, and my childhood friend, who got me into Maiden, left an hour into the show; he was so disappointed with the set list. It was clear from the fans around me, in the last 30 minutes of the show, that they came there for the same reason we did: to hear those stronger, memorable songs we played in our stereos over and over. Unfortunately, we threw our money away listening to a record company shove lame material down our throats, throwing us only scraps at the end. I enjoyed Dream Theater much more. I don't think I'll pay to see Maiden again, unless the tour info ensures me I'll see them perform the songs I thought I was paying for.
